Use our downloadable templates and easily transfer them to these wooden tablets or, if you prefer, use oil or acrylic paint to handwrite the Kanji. These are made to fit in our Nafudakake and come pre-finished, on one side, for a finer result.
Our Suggestion
We've looked for a method you can use to easily make good-looking nafuda, with the grades and names of all the people in your Dojo. If you still prefer to use traditional calligraphy, our advice is that you use some thick paint like oil or acrylics but never a liquid paint (ink), because of the natural pores in the wood.
To use our method you will need some form of transfer medium (DE link), known also as mod podge photo transfer (US link). There are many brands available and you will probably find something at your arts & crafts store. To get the best results, please follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label.

To make it even easier for you, we've made 2 templates, for grades and names, to download and modify to your needs (you'll find just below this). We like to use a website like this one to translate Western names to Japanese phonetical writing. Be aware that the correct translation, in this case, will depend more on how each name sounds than how it is written.

An added detail
As you can see in the photo above, we also like to "dress up" our Aikido belt grades Nafuda with cotton knottings (white for Mudansha and Black for Yūdansha). If you wish to do the same with yours, just let us know and we'll add the cotton tape you need to the package with your nafuda.
We can only set you up with white or black, that we use for other purposes too, but it is easy to find many other colors. Just look for herringbone cotton tape and you'll surely find something you like.
